Mini whisky review #1: The Macallan 18 Year Old

About the whisky (Amazon): This legendary Single Malt is Triple Cask matured for a minimum of 18 years in a unique, complex combination of Exceptional Oak Casks; Spanish oak casks seasoned with sherry, American oak casks seasoned with sherry and American oak casks seasoned with bourbon.

Found a place in Seoul, Korea, which was reasonably priced. The bartender free-poured two drams (and then emptied the bottle when I asked). $32 in total for this fine drink.

Nose: Aroma of dried fruits, a strong sherry blast, with hints of vanilla bean and dried cinnamon.

Taste: Deep and full bodied palate bursting with oak, orange citrus, wood spice, toffee, vanilla, and finishes with some kind of nut that I just can’t pin point (almond?).

Conclusion: I love the Speyside expressions from The Macallan distillery. The 12 year old Fine Oak and Spanish Oak are already amazing with its 18YO big brother being a very nice indulgence. Smooth and easy to drink on a warm night with a deep red colour because of its sherry-aging process, the expression is so decadent and rich that you’ll ask the waiter for another glass, that is, if you can find it.  The distillery is phasing out its age-statement range and introducing ‘colour’ statements, so go buy a glass before it’s gone.
